George Lucas About Star Wars' Popularity: 'It's a Film for 12-Year-Olds'
This definitely wasn’t what staunch Star Wars fans expected to hear from Lucas.
Ever since Star Wars: Episode IV premiered in 1977, there has been no shortage of SW fans around the globe. One of the biggest fan communities ever, Star Wars maintains a massive cult following almost half a century later and despite Disney ’s plentiful efforts in ruining it for everyone. But what’s the secret recipe for this franchise’s overwhelming and stable success?
George Lucas recently revealed it, but his answer wasn’t what most fans expected.
George Lucas About Star Wars’ Popularity
Recently, the Star Wars creator gave an interview to Brut. Among other things, Lucas was asked about what exactly, in his opinion, made the Star Wars movies so compelling to generations upon generations of fans, and he was quick to reveal his secret ingredient: the undying child that lives in him and most Star Wars fans.
“[Star Wars is] designed as a film for twelve-year olds to say ‘You’re going through puberty, you’re very confused, you don’t know what’s going on, who am I, what am I doing here, what should I do, where should I go, what’s my life gonna be?’ – so I wanted to make a movie for them, and I wanted to make it entertaining,” Lucas said.
Lucas Revealed What Inspired Star Wars
George Lucas is proud to have appealed to so many people with his movies, and that only happened because he managed to save his own inner child.
The Star Wars creator spoke about his own childhood experiences that massively influenced and inspired his approach to Star Wars, making it the ultimate blend of fantasy and sci-fi.
“When I was that age, I liked to watch Flash Gordon and Republic Serials and that sort of thing, and so I said ‘I’ll base it on that, and I’ll plug all this other stuff into it.’ And that’s really what I think. When I did it, everyone said ‘Oh, spaceships! Let’s just put spaceships in a movie!’ and I said, ‘That’s not what it is at all!’ So it’s much more than just an action-adventure film,” Lucas shared.
