General Hospital’s Sonny Corinthos Has Fans Outraged for… Staying in Character?
Now that’s new.
Summary:
- General Hospital is an ABC soap opera that has been on the air for more than 6 decades, having premiered in 1963.
- Sonny Corinthos, a mob boss, was introduced in 1993 and has been portrayed by Maurice Benard to this day.
- Recently returned from an amnesia episode, Sonny is back to his old antics, but fans are not having it.
If there's one thing the entire General Hospital fandom, no matter who they like and who they ship with, can easily agree on, it's that the characters haven't been themselves the last few years.
Before former head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O'Connor left their positions, they managed to turn Port Charles upside down.
Even the strongest characters, like Sonny Corinthos, fell victim to the most inconsistently written dialogue and insane storylines designed for shock value. Fortunately, between two of the most common problems Port Charles residents have had to deal with lately, amnesia and sudden fertility, Sonny has had to deal with the former.
He was lucky enough to regain his memories and return to his pre-amnesic self. The only problem is that the fans don't seem to like him that much anymore.
What Happened to Sonny Corinthos?
While no one is ready to see Sonny Corinthos go, since it's hard to imagine General Hospital without his dark presence, the character desperately needs another transformation. Preferably a permanent one.
If Sonny's short-lived journey as Goodie Two-Shoes Mike has shown anything, it's that he's capable of living a normal life. Without the tremendous weight of his past on his shoulders, he still has the compassion and emotional range necessary for a person to be considerate of others and even stable in relationships.
Whether Nina was his one and only or he needs to settle down with someone else is debatable, but it seems like all Nina's fans want to see back is his alter ego, Mike. The real Sonny, constantly unstable, manic at times and disrespectful to the people he cares about the most, doesn't seem to be liked anymore.
The emotional roller coaster that Sonny Corinthos has taken viewers through during his 30+ year run on General Hospital will never be forgotten. However, we are all used to thinking that people grow, change and adapt over the years, and yet this mobster seems to be completely unaffected by every single event in his life.
It seems that the writers who will take up the stories next, Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahey, will now have to decide in which direction they want to take Sonny in the future. Whether he'll remain a cutthroat, ruthless mobster or find the appeal in the life of his alter ego and strive for similar serenity, we'll have to wait and see.
Tune in to General Hospital Monday through Friday on ABC to never miss another episode.
