Maybe it just won’t ever get better.

Even though the soap opera genre has been on the decline since the early 2010s, there are still some major titles running on US television, and General Hospital is the longest of them all. The show, which airs on ABC, celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2023 and is still going strong.

However, many fans seem to worry that the show will never be able to at least reach the greatness it had during its golden years in the 80s and early 90s. General Hospital still has its viewers for now, but their number is getting smaller every year, and the lack of character development is one of the main reasons for that.

Why Did Jason Morgan Return to Port Charles?

One of the soap's biggest selling points in the early spring of 2024 was the return of the presumed dead Jason Morgan to Port Charles. It was not his first rodeo to come back to life, but now that he has spent nearly half a year back home, many viewers are wondering what the narrative point of his return was.

Of course, the show tried its best to play on viewers' nostalgia by bringing back Steve Burton, who was fired in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic for refusing to comply with studio health regulations. However, the excitement of seeing the beloved actor back soon turned to sheer annoyance.

While some people hoped to see Jason take an interest in his children or even reunite with Elizabeth as she went through some tough times with Finn, he ended up falling into the same trap he did decades ago. While the writers try to give their viewers more Jarly moments, the fans try to deal with the disappointment.

The worst thing any soap opera can be is boring, and Jason and Carly's arguments are just that. We have been here before and we all know how that story ended, so why would the writers bother to repeat themselves? Maybe it really is time for General Hospital to weigh all of its legacies and go out on a high note before it loses its last viewers.

If you want to see how quickly Jason and Carly will get back to being very respectful and platonic bestest of friends, and what lies the show will try to feed you next, be sure to tune in to General Hospital Monday through Friday on ABC.
