Obsessing over Carly is not a personality trait.

Summary:

  • General Hospital is an ABC drama that has been on the air since 1963.
  • The character of Drew Cain was widely loved by audiences when he was portrayed by Billy Miller.
  • Since Miller left the show and the role was recast to Cameron Mathison, fans feel the character would be better written off.

While every soap opera has to deal with recasting sooner or later, if done right, it can either make or break the character. Even though General Hospital just celebrated its 60th anniversary on television and knows its way around casting, it still manages to miss the most important roles.

One example would be the infamous case of casting Jennifer Bransford as Carly back in 2005. The other, much more recent, is Brooke Anne Smith as Molly, who the fandom had to riot against on all social media before the problem was fixed.

Although Cameron Mathison's casting as Drew Cain is much less controversial and caused far less vile reaction than the previous two cases, fans believe it completely ruined the character.

The best thing to do with Drew now is to remove him from Port Charles altogether, as his arc is beyond repair.

What Has Happened To Drew Cain?

Although some people have expressed disappointment in the way Mathison portrays Drew, the majority of General Hospital viewers seem to agree that the problem is in the writing and the actor is just doing his best to work with what he's been given. So far, from what we've seen, he's been given pretty much nothing.

Two main things that can be said about Drew: he is obsessed with Carly Corinthos and he loves money. While both are valid and can exist in the universe, they're hardly enough to keep the character going, not to mention certainly not enough to make him at least somewhat interesting.

You know things are getting tough when long-time viewers of General Hospital start wishing the writers would get Carly and Sonny back together, but that's exactly what's been happening lately. The more viewers see Drew, the more they agree that it would be best to just write him off.

Drew's recent decision to let Nina go from the editor's position and give it to Carly (who pretty much wanted to turn it down herself, but then relented) was the last thing viewers needed to go from indifference to outright hatred.

Quite frankly, Drew has caused more unnecessary drama that could have easily been avoided, and fans aren't happy about having to wait another year and a half to see it finally resolved.

Whether you agree that Drew has to go or think his character could have been saved by a recasting and a few tweaks to his non-existent personality, tune in to General Hospital to see what's next. The soap airs Monday through Friday on ABC.
