General Hospital Seems to Care More for the Dead Than They Do for the Living
It’s time to let her go.
Summary:
- In January 2024, General Hospital saw the demise of two characters, Spencer Cassadine and Esme Pince.
- While Spencer is expected to return at some point when the actor is done filming on other sets, Esme's death is considered final.
- However, she continues to appear in the characters' conversations, which doesn't sit well with the fandom.
If there's one General Hospital character whose departure was unexpected, it's Esme Prince. While she returned to her old ways after playing nice due to amnesia, many people thought it was a good thing. After all, Port Charles could use another supervillain, and Avery Pohl was the perfect actress to play ruthless.
However, distracted by the impending departure and the very well-orchestrated temporary death of Spencer Cassadine, no one really thought that Esme was gone for good. And even the writers of General Hospital can't seem to let go of her character more than a month later.
Even though odes to Esme are the last thing General Hospital viewers want or need to hear right now. Not when the real victim of this whole situation gets little to no attention.
Will Avery Pohl Return as Esme?
Considering that General Hospital has already had to deal with one person coming back from the dead, Jason, and another one, Spencer, in the future, the first thought viewers had was that Esme might be back as well. But once Pohl's departure was confirmed as final, everyone moved on from that idea.
Which makes the positive narrative about her motherhood seem even less necessary now. The writers had a chance to make Esme good if they wanted to, since she was good for a while thanks to the amnesia. However, with all the memories coming back, she made her moral choice, and that's the ground everyone should stand on regarding her.
However, if there is one character who deserves more justice, it is Trina Robinson. Not only was she forced into the nasty love/hate triangle between Spencer and Esme before their deaths, but she wasn't given enough respect and screen time to properly mourn the man who was supposed to be her true love.
Now that Spencer is gone, it really feels like a great opportunity for her character to get a fresh start and a new arc that will put her in the spotlight. But so far, all General Hospital is doing is stagnating her. Months may go by, and it would still make sense for Trina to mourn Spencer, but viewers aren't going to wait forever.
Whether you loved Esme or hated her, it is time to let go and move on. After all, the General Hospital cast is full of great actors whose characters are waiting for their turn.
To see who gets the screen time next, be sure to tune in to the show Monday through Friday on ABC.
