Only so much can be forgiven.

Summary:

  • General Hospital is an ABC soap opera that has been on the air since 1963.
  • In 2021, Esme Prince was one of General Hospital's latest villains.
  • After her demise and the actress' departure, fans don't want to see her back anytime soon.

No death is final when it comes to soaps, and that's what makes them so exciting at times. However, because the resurrection trope has been so overused in the past, fans wish the writers would take death a little more seriously. General Hospital's Esme Prince is a great example of someone fans don't want to see come back.

Her character was controversial from the start. However, she suffered just as much stress and was just as wronged as she hurt others. Esme's complexity was one of her best, if not redeeming, qualities. With all the backlash the writers have faced in recent years, Esme's storyline has been one of the victories.

As such, her death came as a surprise to many. The woman who recently regained all of her memories and was ready to take another step down the criminal path could have had a lot more to say or do. However, the mysterious departure of Avery Kristen Pohl, who portrayed Esme over the years, put an end to the character.

Is General Hospital’s Esme Really Dead?

Even though many viewers who found Esme's darker side more interesting than the current protagonists of the series are devastated by the news of her death, no one really wants to see her or the actress behind her back for another role.

Esme has suffered a lot, and Avery Kristen Pohl delivered a perfectly nuanced portrayal of her character's mixed emotions every step of the way. Even though her death was a bit of a surprise, the impact of it being final would be much stronger if the show didn't want to recast the actress and bring the character back.

There was no need for her to imitate her death, if she was set to continue on her villanous path. And if she would re-emerge trying to redeem herself, no one would ever believe that.

The beauty of Esme was in Pohl's portrayal. Not only will she be rejected to be portrayed by someone else, but she would likely end up being cheesy and repetitive like every other villain on the soap that overstayed their welcome.

The comeback of the actress herself would have been a nice touch if people weren't so tired of countless secret twins. It would take time for the audience to forget about Esme, so she couldn't come back right away if the writers wanted to have a shock factor attached to her comeback. If not, the whole point is questionable.

Praising Avery Kristen Pohl's performance, many General Hospital fans believe that the actress will move on with her career and pursue bigger and better productions. The only thing left for viewers to do is to keep an eye out for updates on her big break.

And to see where the story leads all the other Port Charles residents, you can tune in to General Hospital Monday through Friday on ABC.
