Viewers are longing for fresh blood.

Summary:

  • General Hospital is an iconic ABC soap opera that has been on the air since 1963.
  • The show has lived through waves of popularity, however, saw a major decline in viewership after 2010, and continued to decline in writing quality.
  • For the past year, audiences have wanted to see Chris Van Etten and Dan O'Connor, General Hospital's head writers, replaced.
  • Now that they're both retired, viewers are hoping that the Sonny/Carly/Nina/Willow storyline will be put to rest.

When a TV drama runs for more than 60 years and brings at least some joy to its fans, it means that the quality of the production is still there. Although there have been some bumps in the road and rough spots in the scripts, General Hospital viewers have been willing to turn a blind eye, because there are only so many stories you can tell without getting repetitive.

Recently, however, more and more viewers began to turn off their favorite soap. While the main characters were still there, alive and relatively well, the storytelling style became so boring that watching General Hospital became a daily torture. Focusing on the same 4 characters from episode to episode, the soap lost its appeal completely.

And the audience was sure they knew who to blame. Although former head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O'Connor had some promising ideas early in their reign, the more the show went on, the more questions the fanbase began to have.

Now that the viewers' prayers have finally been answered and the writing duo is gone, is there any chance of restoring Port Charles to its former glory?

General Hospital Cast Expansion

As much as General Hospital viewers adore Sonny Corinthos and the actor behind the character, Maurice Benard, who has put three decades of hard work into the show, they feel that the Sonny-centric era of the show should finally come to an end.

He has experienced so much loss, made so many babies, killed so many people, and been involved in so much love drama that his memoirs would probably turn into a novel franchise.

On top of that, his two current on-screen rival love interests, Carly and Nina, have bored the show's viewers to death with their battles, which the fandom has affectionately dubbed the ‘Granny Wars.’ And if you think that sounds bad, imagine how bad it must be to watch it on screen.

The only breath of fresh air that viewers have had so far has been Spencer and Trina's young and blossoming love, and now that the writers have changed, many are hoping that it will be just the right time to reintroduce more young adult characters to shake things up.

With Esme's big comeback to her villainous roots, viewers are hoping for some chaos that Port Charles hasn't seen in a while.

Whether the new writing duo of Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahey will be able to handle the bored fandom and give viewers something new and refreshing while wrapping up the storylines that no one cares about anymore, we'll have to wait and see. The new material will hit viewers' screens in March.

Be sure to tune in to ABC Monday through Friday to not miss a single new episode of General Hospital.
