General Hospital Continues to Push Forward Anyone but Those Who Actually Make Sense
It's the Carly & Nina show now.
Summary:
- General Hospital is one of the few major soap operas still airing on American broadcast networks.
- The show has introduced many beloved characters over the years and killed off just as many.
- However, the writers seem to favor only a few out of a large cast, leaving others without storylines to develop.
In any ensemble show with many different characters, it's important for the writers to maintain balance. You would think that would be easier in a soap opera that airs daily and has so many hours to fill, but General Hospital proves that no matter the circumstances, the production's favorites will always remain the key characters.
Of course, Carly and Sonny deserve the recognition for not only being a super couple in the past, but two characters who have stuck with General Hospital through thick and thin for three full decades.
Sure, Nina and Drew could have been just as interesting a dynamic. But if the whole purpose of the soap is always going to revolve around them, it's time to think about a spin-off.
From one week to the next, the younger cast members are being cornered with weak storylines and boring discussions. When Spencer was on the show, Sprina's scenes felt like a breath of fresh air. Now that he's gone, even that's gone.
Jason Morgan's return, as well as the change in the show's head writers, make for something new. Sam McCall finally being recognized as a character in her own right, rather than an addition to whoever needs a “sexy bad girl” like her, would have been a great start.
What Happened to General Hospital’s Sam McCall?
Speaking of Jason's return, there are three main ladies that the fandom would like to see him back with. One is of course his complicated best friend Carly Corinthos, another is Liz Webber, and then there is Sam McCall. While all three would work, depending on where the story goes, there is one thing that fans of Sam would want to see first.
For years, Sam has been deprived of any autonomy. She stands in the middle of all the men around her and goes through a lot, but is never allowed to have a full character story or arc of her own. From a lover fighting for his life, to a rebellious son, to now Jason coming back from the dead, Sam is just a witness, but never feels like a participant.
Instead of making Nina miserable for another 40 minutes, it would have been much more fun to see the writers of General Hospital try to make Sam actually interesting. She has become a shell of the character she once was, and now, with all the changes going on around her, would be the perfect time to put her in the spotlight.
If you miss the days when Sam wasn't just a shadow and a background character in someone else's life, be sure to check out new episodes of General Hospital Monday through Friday on ABC. Who knows what March will bring to Port Charles!
