Game of Thrones: Tyrion’s Decline Has Nothing to Do With Bad Writing
Although the quality of the show definitely dropped in later seasons, the fact that Tyrion became a shell of his former self is perfectly explainable.

Although Game of Thrones remains one of the greatest TV shows ever made, as it is hard to underestimate the impact it has had on the television industry and popular culture, there is no denying that the show has been on the decline in its later seasons.
Considering that George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series hadn't been completed at the time the series was produced, the creators ran out of source material around the show's fifth season and had to write their own conclusion to the story.
GoT’s Writing Went Downhill in Later Seasons
Unfortunately, this change didn't benefit the series, as the decline in quality became more and more apparent as time went on, culminating in the disappointing final season, which caused massive outrage from fans.
They didn't appreciate that many of the characters they had come to know and love, most notably Daenerys and Jon Snow, began to act in ways that contradicted their previously established personalities.
Another fan-favorite character who became a shadow of his former self in later seasons is Tyrion Lannister, brilliantly portrayed by Peter Dinklage, who made up for his lack of height with a sharp intellect that saved him more than once.
However, ever since he became Daenerys' advisor, fans have noticed that his counsel has been somewhat ineffective, making it seem as if Tyrion has lost his grip on things.
Tyrion’s Decline Is Perfectly Understandable
Some have blamed this sudden change on him being the victim of bad writing, just like many other characters on the show, while others point out that the explanation may be much simpler and more logical.
Tyrion's family has always been a difficult subject and an emotional weakness for him, as his relationship with each of his relatives has been incredibly messy and complicated, but while he was on their side, it didn't affect his judgment too much.
As soon as fate turned Tyrion against them, all those internal conflicts and pressures began to interfere with his decision making, sometimes leading to underwhelming results.
After all, not all of the advice he gave Daenerys was downright terrible, proving that he didn't suddenly lose all of his intellect in an instant.
With all of this in mind, while the writing for the show has indeed gone downhill in the later seasons, Tyrion was supposed to become a shell of his former self due to the horrible situation he found himself in.
