Game of Thrones Star Recalls Massive Hate That Prompted Her to Delete Social Media
Her character had a confrontation with Arya Stark.
The viewers remembered Game of Thrones not only for the complexity of the plot, but also for a whole kaleidoscope of villains.
One actress that played a negative character received so much hate that she had to leave social networks for a while.
Actress Faye Marsay played Waif on Game of Thrones. In an interview with The Independent, the actress admitted that she has been criticized by fans for her character's feud with Arya Stark:
"After Thrones came out, there was quite intense backlash at one point, Just because of the character I played. [The fans] hated her. Because Maisie [Williams]'s character was, like, the one – and there I am, hitting her with a stick."
In the show, Waif is a girl slightly older than Arya.
Despite her faceless status, she repeatedly demonstrates the presence of her own motives that contradict the ideology of the Order – for example, she disliked Arya from the moment she appeared in the temple, tried to prove her superiority to her in every way possible, and then rejoiced when Jaqen H'ghar allowed her to kill Arya.
Waif trains a blinded Arya by fighting her and playing the game of faces. When Arya manages to defeat her rival, the girl regains her sight.
Waif continues to train Arya, enjoying her superiority in combat and telling the girl that she cannot become Faceless.
When Arya fails her mission for the second time, Waif asks the Faceless for permission to kill the girl.
She finds her and, disguised as an elderly woman, sneaks in and strikes her several times in the stomach with a dagger.
Arya manages to escape by jumping into the river.
Later, Waif finds her with the actress, whom Arya had been ordered to kill. After completing the mission, Waif pursues Arya again, but Arya lures her into hideout and kills by stabbing with the Needle.
The Faceless later discovers a trail of blood leading to the Waif's face in the Hall of Faces in the House of Black and White.
