Game of Thrones' Most Tragic Storyline Still Makes Us Sob
George Martin has created a number of fascinating characters. Often they have experienced terrible events, and now the viewers have decided to choose the most unfortunate protagonist.
Many fans immediately thought of Daenerys, who grew up in terrible conditions after the death of her father. Since Viserys, her older brother, sold the little girl to the Khal, Dany's journey turned into a kaleidoscope of terrible situations.
The last remaining Targaryen had to accept the death of her closest and most loyal aide, Jorah, witness the beheading of her only friend, and deal with the loss of the dragon that replaced her child. And she has seen a blade plunged into her stomach by the one man who could give her love.
Fans have also taken note of Jaime Lannister, who has come a long way from arrogant villain to true knight. Once the best fighter in the Seven Kingdoms, he lost the hand that held his sword on his journey of redemption.
But Sandor Clegane, known as the Hound, has suffered the most, according to viewers. And if the character with the burned part of his face seemed like a true villain at first, the writers began to show Clegane's other side as the series progressed.
The Hound has been haunted by his older brother's harsh treatment of him since childhood. This traumatic upbringing scarred Clegane both physically and emotionally, shaping him into the ruthless warrior he would become.
The warrior's character changes from a merciless killer to a man struggling with his violent past. His cynicism and disbelief in the concept of honor make him a compelling anti-hero. Despite his rough exterior, the Hound shows moments of vulnerability and compassion that hint at the tortured soul lurking beneath his armor.
Clegane goes through an entire arc of redemption after meeting Arya Stark. Their relationship reveals a more human side to the Hound, as he learns to put the other person's welfare ahead of his own desire for revenge. He becomes a protector, albeit a harsh one in his own way, keeping the girl safe and teaching her valuable lessons in survival.
Sandor helps the Night's Watch and Queen Daenerys in the battle for Winterfell and the throne, but the ghosts of his past won't let him go. In the final battle, the Hound faces his fearsome brother, but is unable to defeat him. Grabbing him by the hands, he leaps from the castle ruins to put an end to the Clegane family.
