Forgotten Stephen King's Flop Horror Deserves a Second Chance After Almost 40 Years
Maybe now he will know better what to do.
Stephen King is definitely the king of horror writing and that’s why his works often become the ultimate source of inspiration for many directors. There are a lot of movie adaptations created over the years, and some of them turned out to be masterpieces like The Shining or The Shawshank Redemption.
But there were some movies that ended up being huge flops. For example, The Mangler, directed by Tobe Hooper, who also created 1974's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The movie even had Robert Englund ( Freddy Krueger himself) as a lead star, but still the poor storyline made the viewers take it as rubbish.
There was a time though when King himself decided to direct his own movie based on his novel, and decided to use his short story called Night Shift. Now, what is it about?
The movie is called Maximum Overdrive. After a comet passes over the Earth, it supposedly creates some sort of power to create chaos when all the electronic devices suddenly come to life and even gain consciousness.
Why Was Maximum Overdrive So Mid?
The movie was created in 1986 and despite the fact that it was King’s directorial debut, it still was loved by the fans of the genre. However, it still ended up being a huge flop – both critically and commercially. The film’s Rotten Tomatoes score is only 14%.
One of the reasons we think the movie ended up as a huge flop is that it was a little ahead of its time. And now would be the right time to create a remake of it.
“Maximum Overdrive would make a lot more sense today in the world of smart devices like refrigerators and thermostats that connect to the internet, self-driving cars, and cellphones that can easily spy on the user. This could really do for a remake. I kinda want a new Maximum Overdrive now that the world is moving on,” Redditor CarcosaJuggalo said.
In fact, it will be fun to give King the chance to remake his own movie based on his novel. If you still want to give 1986 Maximum Overdrive a chance, you can stream it on Prime Video.
