Forgotten 100%-Rated Sci-Fi Thriller That Was Canceled Too Soon (Starz to Blame)
It’s time to give this hidden gem a try.
There’s no doubt that science fiction shows just hit differently. Isn't it cool to explore the many different worlds that the creators of sci-fi shows lay out before us?
There are high-tech universes where humans are replaced by robots, or worlds where humans are advanced enough to live a life we can only dream of. Or there are some series where parallel universes not only exist, but are demonstrably filled with inhabitants.
One of the most amazing sci-fi shows ever created is the one called Counterpart. The series premiered on Starz in 2017 and lasted until 2019 with two seasons.
At the center of the story is a rather old man named Howard Silk. He's a low-level agent whose career in a Berlin-based United Nations spy agency is fading, but then one day he discovers that there is an alternate world where another man just like him exists…
He somehow enters the new world he didn't know existed, only to find out how dangerous it is, and that the company he worked for for so many years has a dark secret. The new world he discovers is full of mysteries, and the only person he can trust is his alternate version, a man named Prime.
Apparently, the show had no promotion at all, and during the time it was running, it wasn't that popular: simply because few people knew about it! However, those who did find out that there was such a spy thriller show starring J.K. Simmons appreciated it for its powerful storytelling, great performances and amazing visuals.
Unfortunately, the show was canceled after season 2, even though it had a lot of potential. And for the most bizarre reason.
The platform said that the series turned out to be too "male-centered" and it didn't fit in with the female-focused agenda.
“Yeah this makes no sense to me. If anything, I think this show has some of the strongest, well developed female characters in any show. Just when you think you know them they peel back these really fascinating layers. They’re really complicated and you can’t help but sympathize even though they’re doing bad things,” Redditor CineMike84 said.
While fans are still hoping that Counterpart will be picked up by other platforms and we will finally get another season, you can still binge the existing two seasons on Prime.
