All six seasons of Vikings, an action historical drama based on the Norse sagas with an impressive 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is coming to Netflix on March 30.

Vikings showrunner Michael Hirst excels at creating spectacular costume dramas. He was a producer on The Borgias, created The Tudors and wrote the scripts for the films Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

What is Vikings About?

The young Viking Ragnar Lothbrok asks his ruler to stop raiding neighboring tribes and instead sail to explore the unknown British Isles.

When he is refused, he assembles a team of his own, leads a successful raid, and returns home to take his place as Jarl. Thus begins the long history of the semi-mythical Viking, who was said to be a direct descendant of Odin, the god of war.

Vikings is Similar to Game of Thrones in Terms of Political Drama

Vikings is similar to Game of Thrones. It also begins as the story of one character, Ragnar, but later expands into a political drama about large-scale wars, unexpected alliances, and even more unexpected betrayals.

The scale of events in Vikings would make the creators of any other historical epic envious, and the battle scenes here are filmed no worse than many full-length movies.

Of course, Vikings is quite liberal with real events, but it does a good job of conveying the atmosphere of life in the early Middle Ages: a cynical, barbaric time of unimaginably cruel executions and eternal redistribution of power.

Vikings Features a Number of Strong Female Characters

The modern cinematic trend of strong, independent women capable of standing up to men on equal terms was also in vogue among the ancient Scandinavians.

The sagas are full of references to winged Valkyries, as well as earthly warriors who wielded the sword with skill and helped their husbands and lovers defeat their enemies.

All the strong women of the North are embodied in the collective image of the warrior Lagertha, the ex-wife of Ragnar Lothbrok.

A woman with a daring character, excellent with sword and shield, Lagertha, after divorcing her famous husband, decided to become a ruler herself, which she succeeded in doing.

But Lagertha does not fight alone: she has her own army of ruthless female warriors, so the topic of strong women in the series is more than explored.
