Forget Not Dead Yet, There's a Better Show About Ghosts with 97% Tomatometer on Prime Video
Not Dead Yet cancellation left a hole in your heart? Don't worry, we've got something even better for you.
Not Dead Yet was canceled after the second season, and this network's decision probably resonates with the impressions of most fans. While the first season drew viewers to their screens thanks to a successful mix of personal stories of the characters and a supernatural aspect with ghosts from obituaries, the second season disappointed many fans – it became a workplace sitcom and lost almost all of its charm.
But for Not Dead Yet fans, it's not time to get upset yet – because there is another sitcom about spirits that, let's face it, is superior to the series with Gina Rodriguez in every way. And this series is Ghosts.
What is Ghosts About?
The plot of Ghosts revolves around an old mansion that is unexpectedly inherited by the main characters – a couple from New York. The initial joy at the sudden gift of fate is replaced by an unexpected circumstance – the house is inhabited by a dozen ghosts, spirits from different eras.
There's a Prohibition-era singer, a cop from the 1700s, a hippie from the '60s, an overly optimistic Boy Scout leader from the '80s, and more.
The new owners of the property intend to turn the mansion into a hotel, but the ghosts oppose these plans. An accident nearly sends the main character, Samantha, to the afterlife, and after she recovers, she begins to see and hear ghosts. Now the spouses must try not to go crazy and figure out how to get along with their unexpected neighbors.
Ghosts is Made By an Experienced and Acclaimed Director
Ghosts was directed by Trent O'Donnell, who has several very successful projects under his belt, including Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Good Place. In fact, Ghosts seems to be a mix of those series: the former gave the show excellent humor and a strong tandem of comedic actors, the latter added a flair of mysticism associated with the other world.
And the showrunner once again managed to create an outwardly light-hearted but witty show that has its own vibe.
Ghosts Doesn't Pretend to Be a Unique Story About a Haunted Mansion
Ghosts is infused with humor and self-deprecation. The authors are well aware that there are countless stories about haunted houses and that it is unlikely that they will be able to produce something truly original. Therefore, they stuff the plot with numerous references to the most prominent representatives of the genre.
For example, there are jokes about Ghost with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. There is also a place for direct quotations: sitting in the car, the main character repeats almost word for word an episode from The Sixth Sense.
Ghosts is a remake of the British series of the same name, and if you were looking for something cozy and friendly, then in this case it might be better to choose the remake.
The British version deserves all the praise it can get for being an original project, but there's no denying that this is a darker, more caustic series with plenty of dark humor.
