Forget Madame Web: These 12 Superhero Flops Were Rated Even Lower (Down to 0%!)

Superhero movies aren't the most respected in the industry to begin with. Even though many superheroes have very complex backstories, some people still consider such movies childish and shallow. The recent failures of both giants, Marvel and the rebooted DCEU, don't help matters.

Madame Web, trashed by pretty much everyone, starting with critics and ending with the actors themselves, has landed on the 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. You might be surprised to learn, however, that it is still relatively far from being the worst superhero movie ever made.

Jonah Hex (2010) – 12%

The phenomenon of some of the greatest actors starring in some of the worst possible movies needs to be studied. Not even Josh Brolin's brilliant performance could save the story of gunslinger and bounty hunter Jonah Hex from being completely trashed by both critics and audiences. Cheesy and nonsensical aside, the movie is just too boring.

Batman & Robin (1997) – 12%

There are so many versions and iterations of the iconic DC Comics duo, but this has to be one of the worst. However, due to its age, some consider this movie to be a campy classic, so if you don't mind a slightly hectic, chaotic, over-the-top, and almost satirical approach to the story, you might want to give it a try.

Elektra (2005) – 11%

Again, this movie had everything to become a superhero classic: a strong female lead, an interesting comic book backstory, and Jennifer Garner at the center of the cast. However, Elektra is a perfect example of a comic book story that takes itself far too seriously to be exciting or entertaining in any way.

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) – 10%

As the 5th and final installment in the original Superman movie series (including the Supergirl one), this movie understandably put the series to rest. Some blame the financial crisis that hit the production studio, others simply believe that the script was so weak that this movie should never have been made in the first place.

RoboCop 3 (1993) – 9%

Even though the movie was a commercial and critical failure upon its release, the RoboCop franchise lived on and still has a huge fan base. So if you're a diehard fan, this movie won't be enough to turn you off to the story. However, if you are a casual viewer looking for some action, this movie is not worth your time.

Fantastic Four ( 2015) – 9%

Of all the superhero movies of the 2010s, this may have been the biggest disappointment, simply because of how much hope people put into its production. Unfortunately, the script didn't live up to anyone's expectations, and neither fans nor critics found the comic's well-known fun in the movie.

Steel (1997) – 8%

Shaquille O'Neal is a lot of things, but he is not the superhero we want or deserve to see on our screens. The movie was based on a lot of genre clichés, which aren't always bad, but they didn't work together. The acting didn't help either. So if you are scrolling through some lesser known movies and see this one, just keep scrolling.

Supergirl (1984) – 8%

Now that Millie Alcock has been cast as the DCEU's Supergirl, you may be wondering about the previous adaptations of the character. The 80's movie is definitely not the example the modern movie needs to follow, as Helen Slater's Kara Zor-El lacks the depth to be complex or entertaining in any way. Even The CW did more justice to the story!

Catwoman (2004) – 8%

This is one of those bad superhero movies that had huge meme potential, and 20 years later, the Internet has definitely taken advantage of it. While the movie is considered cheesy and even ridiculous at times, it is a Halle Berry classic and one of the actress' most iconic looks, so it deserves at least an ironic look.

Son of the Mask (2005) – 6%

There is one thing that made The Mask movie franchise funny and worthy of attention, and that is Jim Carrey. Trying to recreate the past success without him as part of the formula was already a big mistake, and the lack of wit in the script only made matters worse. Son of the Mask is at best barely watchable.

Zoom (2006) – 4%

One of the best genre mixes to come out of the 2000s was the family superhero movie, made specifically for younger audiences, but with the potential to be enjoyed by everyone. Zoom was an honest attempt to create one of those movies, but a complete misfire that led to it being a total flop.

Max Steel (2016) – 0%

Although critics unanimously panned the story of human teenager Max and his alien companion Steel, who combine their powers to create a superhero, audiences are not so hateful. The movie stands with an audience rating of 48%, so if the premise sounds like something that might intrigue you, give it a try and see where you land.
