Forget Grey's Anatomy, a Better Medical Drama from Elite Creator Is Coming to Netflix
Upcoming Spanish medical drama has potential to become Netflix's hottest show.
Medicine is always about people. That's why Grey's Anatomy, an aspirational show about doctors, is focused on its characters and their inner workings. And over 20 seasons, viewers have found (almost) no serious reason to doubt the talent of the show's creator, Shonda Rhimes.
The group of writers under her leadership describes the characters perfectly: the motivations almost never raise questions, everyone develops according to their personal characteristics, and therefore what happens on the screen becomes easy to imagine in reality.
This is what makes Grey's Anatomy so popular: all the doctors are ordinary people with their own weaknesses and problems. That's why viewers continue to watch the show even after 20 seasons.
At the same time, however, 20 seasons is such a long time that it is sometimes hard to believe. Stability and consistency are great, but fans of medical dramas are long overdue for a breath of fresh air. In addition, another of television's most popular hospital dramas, The Good Doctor, was recently canceled after its seventh season.
Fans won't be bored for long – another medical drama awaits, this time from the creator of Netflix hit Elite, Carlos Montero.
What Will Breathless Be About?
Breathless will tell the story of the doctors and residents of the Joaquín Sorolla Hospital in Valencia. We will see not only the typical stories of hospital routine and saving lives, intertwined with the personal tragedies of the workers, but also more global problems – the response of doctors to the healthcare crisis.
Spain is a country with one of the richest cinematic traditions, and in recent years its filmmakers have only strengthened this status. Spanish actors are all the rage in Hollywood, and directors are bold in their experimentation.
Montero also departs from the standard formula of medical procedurals and offers an unusual beginning to his story:
“The initial idea for this show came from that paradox, that dilemma, that to save the health care system as a whole, you may have to abandon the patients. It’s obviously a very extreme premise, but I think there is a very rich opportunity for storytelling there.”
Breathless Features an Experienced Showrunner And a Stellar Cast
Although Spanish television is rich in medical dramas, most of them have not gained popularity outside their country and have had rather modest budgets. By collaborating with Netflix, Monter0 got the opportunity to follow the traditions of his country while having a decent budget – and as we already saw in Elite, the director knows how to do it.
If you are still in doubt about whether or not to watch Breathless, here is a fact that will definitely convince you – one of the main roles in the drama will be played by Money Heist star Najwa Nimri, who played the role of Alicia Sierra, one of the main fan favorites, in the series.
Where and When to Watch Breathless?
Breathless does not yet have an exact release date, but work on the series is almost finished, which means that the new medical drama can be expected to be released on Netflix this year.
