For 10 Years, Friends Had Been Driving Fans Crazy With Its Most Annoying Plot Hole
This one is actually about the apartment. But not in the way you may think.
Summary:
- Friends, a popular show, has faced criticism for its placement of windows in apartments.
- The interaction between Monica's apartment and Naked Guy's apartment, which later becomes Ross' apartment, is a bit confusing.
- In some scenes, the apartments are very close to each other, and in others, they are across a large road.
Years after its final episode, Friends remains one of the most popular shows ever. So it's no surprise that nothing escapes the scrutiny of the fans.
You probably never noticed that with each new episode, the placement of the windows in apartments makes less and less sense. Even fans in New York, where the show is set, had no idea how it was possible.
Most of the interaction in the show is between Monica's apartment and Naked Guy's apartment, which later becomes Ross' apartment. In the 8th episode of season 3, the group constructs a giant chopstick device to check if Ugly Naked Guy is still alive. Judging by the size of the thing, the apartments aren't too far apart; they only extend a couple feet.
We also learn that Ross' apartment is lower than Monica's. In that case, how can Monica see Rachel and Phoebe cuddling with a dog on the couch in S7E8? The sofa is not even right in front of the window in the first place. Plus, the girls have a balcony. So unless Monica could see through things, there's no way she could see the dog.
And the building as a whole doesn't make sense. We know that the Central Perk is downstairs from the Friends' apartments. However, in the exterior shot, the building has a red storefront. The Central Perk has a green storefront.
It also has two wide roads on either side. But scenes set outside Central Perk look like they're set in a narrow alley. Normally, the exterior shot in the show indicates the exact location of the apartment.
If this is the case, then Monica's apartment should be on one of the two sides that we see. But that means that Ross' apartment would have to be on the other side of a major street.
This brings even more confusion to the poking device and to the fact that they are seeing each other from different flats.
“I don't think they gave to much thought about this which is annoying because it's all messed up,” said Redditor LegenDariusGheghe.
However, this plot hole doesn't really affect the viewer's experience. It's just an interesting detail to remember the next time you watch your favorite show. You can do that right now on Netflix and Sky Go.
