Fight Us: Guy Ritchie And 3 Other Directors Who Are Criminally Overrated
These directors made a hit or two a long time ago, but for some reason are still considered to be directorial luminaries.
For some, recognition comes easily, while others have to fight for it for decades. We know many directors who remain undeservedly in the shadows, while those whose talents leave much to be desired, are much better known.
In this list, there’re four famous directors whose hype does not always match the quality of their films.
1. Guy Ritchie
It all started in the 90's when Ritchie made two cult hits – Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. At that time he was constantly compared to Tarantino and people thought that Ritchie was about to break through and enter the pantheon of great directors.
But there was no breakthrough. Moreover, over the years Ritchie lost his auteur style. When you compare Guy’s movies, you get the feeling that they were made by different people. From a talented budding director, Ritchie has become a craftsman ready to shoot anything.
2. The Wachowskis
These directors made one of the most important movies of the 90s, still admired for its innovation. The Matrix and its sequels propelled the Wachowskis into Hollywood's elite.
But all of the directors' subsequent movies received mixed reviews. Cloud Atlas was the most well-received of them all. However, the movie failed miserably at the box office, so it cannot be called a huge success.
The recent The Matrix Resurrections, directed by Lana Wachowski, clearly showed that the director had a crisis of ideas. The movie was so disappointing that fans are still flooding the Internet with sarcastic reviews.
In fact, this director's entire career is based on one great movie, The Sixth Sense. The success of it in the 90s was so huge that the studios literally flooded the director with money, allowing him to make all the projects he wanted.
But after The Sixth Sense, not one of the director's movies received an unambiguously good rating. Signs was criticized for the dull final twist, and After Earth and The Last Airbender were completely destroyed by critics and viewers.
4. Kevin Smith
There is simply no denying that Kevin Smith is an extremely overrated director. After the release of Clerks, he was even called the most important director of the generation. Dogma also received positive reviews, but things went south after Clerks II.
Smith's career hit rock bottom in the 2010s. Now the director makes movies of such low quality that it is hard to believe that this is the same person who directed Clerks. Tusk and Yoga Hosers are the best proof.
