Fifty Shades of Grey Sequels Finally Bring Their Cringe to Netflix
More like fifty shades of shame.
Don’t even try to pretend you didn’t watch some obviously bad movies to have a good evening chill or to secretly enjoy them. We bet almost everyone has seen an erotic drama that perfectly serves as a guilty pleasure flick, 2015’s hit Fifty Shades of Grey.
While the original movie was added to Netflix ’s catalog in June, we have some better news for you: the cringe marathon can be continued, as two sequels of this notorious box office sensation are just around the corner to arrive on the platform too.
The first one, Fifty Shades Darker, was released in 2017 and followed our favorite Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey as they try to rekindle their relationship and make it through new disturbing obstacles and people who eagerly try to separate them.
Not delving much into spoilers - however, such a pleasure can’t be spoiled by anything - let’s remember the latest sequel (at least, so far), 2018’s Fifty Shades Freed, as the fairy tale that gives the couple what they want despite their enemies’ painful intervention.
These movies are also based on E. L. James's best-selling novels and, just like the first film, were hugely successful at the box office. They managed to gross $381 million and $372 million respectively, although they’re inferior in quality even to the cringey original.
The dialogues are sillier here, the plot development is questionable, the antagonists aren’t entertaining at all, and you end up indifferent to Anastasia and Christian’s dramas.
Fortunately, both sequels, rated 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, are still perfect for watching with friends. The leads’ lines, awful sex scenes and, besides, some shameful action sequences that are trying to seem serious in the third movie, are extremely hilarious.
“This film series fascinates me, because despite how objectively bad it and the books are, it taps into something that people are actually willing to pay for,” says Redditor Yackemflaber.
Yes, we’re willing to laugh to tears and perceive the top-notch cringe!
Luckily, you won’t need to pay for it now if you have a Netflix subscription, as Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed will become available on the platform on July 16.
