Fans Fear That Dreamworks Follows Disney’s Path, And Not In A Good Way
It seems that another wave of live-action remakes is about to begin.
How to Train Your Dragon is a computer-animated fantasy film by the DreamWorks Animation studio, released in 2010, which was an instant success and spawned a new film franchise.
Vaguely based on a 2003 book by British author Cressida Cowell, it follows a young Viking named Hiccup, voiced by Jay Baruchel, who is the son of the village chief Stoick the Vast, voiced by Gerard Butler.
This fantasy world is populated by dragons of various kinds, and Hiccup befriends a Night Fury dragon and names him Toothless because of the creature's retractable teeth.
Earlier this year, however, it was announced that DreamWorks would be following in Disney 's footsteps with a live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, to be written and directed by Dean DeBlois, who was also responsible for the animated films.
And now it seems that production is finally underway, as the first cast members have been announced. Mason Thames, known for his appearance in The Black Phone (2021), will play Hiccup and Nico Parker, who recently played Sarah Miller in The Last of Us TV series, will play Astrid Hofferson, Hiccup's love interest.
Fans are absolutely not happy that yet another company has started remaking their own properties in live action, less than 15 years after the original was released.
They say How to Train Your Dragon doesn't need an update because it still holds up perfectly, so this is a blatant attempt to make money without taking any creative risks.
Even though the casting looks good and the creator of the original is behind the remake, fans believe that if the movie becomes a success, it will only create a new endless wave of creatively bankrupt remakes, identical to the one we see with Disney.
The production process for the movie is scheduled to begin this summer and it will be released on March 14, 2025.
