If there's a movie that totally deserves to become a franchise, it has to be District 9.

Sequels, reboots, and cinematic universes are all the rage in Hollywood these days. Franchises like Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are bringing in the big bucks. Many fans believe District 9 has a huge potential as a franchise.

Let's face it, 2009's District 9 was a breath of fresh air in the sci-fi genre. It mixed action, drama, and a lot of political allegory to give us something truly unique.

Set in Johannesburg, South Africa, the film explored a world where alien refugees were stuck in slum-like conditions. It was a wild ride, challenging our thoughts on segregation, xenophobia, and what it means to be human.

District 9 left audiences hungry for more. The conclusion of the film hinted at a new chapter in the story, with Wikus on the run, having been transformed into an alien-human hybrid.

The fate of Christopher and his people, as well as the potential repercussions of the extraterrestrial weaponry, remain unexplored.

During an interview with IGN in 2013, the director of the movie Neill Blomkamp expressed his strong desire to create a sequel to District 9.

He genuinely wanted to continue the story, but faced a dilemma due to having numerous ideas and projects in mind. In relation to a possible sequel, Blomkamp stated that he hoped to eventually bring District 10 to life.

During an interview in August 2022, Sharlto Copley, who played Wikus, revealed that discussions about District 10 were ongoing.

He mentioned that both he and Blomkamp had worked on drafts for the film, and expressed optimism about its prospects once Blomkamp completed shooting Gran Turismo.

Thanks to social media and online fan communities, we have a voice louder than ever before. Fans can directly communicate with filmmakers, studios, and actors, making their desires known.

Just look at the success of campaigns like the Snyder Cut of Justice League.

When fans come together, they can move mountains. So who knows, maybe the District 9 sequel is going to finally get off the ground soon.
