Fans Are Still Mad At Grey's Anatomy For Ruining Its Most Beloved Character
The one who was everyone’s favorite turned out to be the worst person ever in the end.
Throughout the 19 seasons of Grey's Anatomy, fans have had many characters to fall in love and identify with. Although all of them had some sort of human flaw, just about all of them were able to grow on some portion of the audience.
However, very few of them were liked by so many that they deserved to be called fan favorites. One of them was attending orthopedic surgeon Callie Torres, who had a great character development only to have it ruined at the very end of her arc.
Originally created as a love interest who would eventually become the wife of George O'Malley, Callie Torres, portrayed by Sara Ramirez, became one of the most complex and beloved characters on the show.
She was one of the first characters on the show to explore sexuality and became one of the longest-running LGBT characters in television history, with 11 seasons and 239 episodes filmed.
Funny and strong, Callie Torres was not only a voice for a vastly underrepresented community, but a genuinely interesting and dynamic character to follow. However, like many other characters on Grey's Anatomy, she suffered greatly at the end of her storyline, becoming a true villain in the eyes of many fans.
After her divorce from Arizona Robbins, portrayed by Jessica Capshaw in the show, Callie Torres turned on her and started a very dirty and painful custody battle for her daughter Sofia, who she wanted to take to New York with her and her new girlfriend.
Even though the writers tried to make the viewers feel sorry for her, nobody bought it: the story made no sense at all.
Fans seem to agree that Callie was acting out of selfishness, which was not in her character. Moreover, her need to take Sofia with her made little practical sense, as changing schools and moving a child away for only a year would be more traumatic than helpful.
No wonder viewers had no choice but to side with Arizona in disbelief that the writers would waste a character like Callie Torres.
Even though it is implied that both Callie and Arizona eventually found peace, resolved their conflict, and found their way back to each other, fans are still unable to forgive the showrunners for such a messy storyline.
Many wish they would have let Callie leave the show a little sooner, just so she was never ruined so badly.
If you want to re-watch Grey's Anatomy and relive Callie and Arizona's story, you can stream the previous seasons of the show on Neflix, Hulu, fuboTV or ABC. Tune in to ABC live on Thursdays to catch up on the new episodes.
