Face/Off Sequel is Really Happening, Here Are First Details

It's official, people – the Face/Off sequel is really happening. And according to Nicolas Cage, it's going to be a family affair. In an interview with Collider, Cage revealed that the sequel will follow the children of his character, Castor Troy, and John Travolta's character, Sean Archer, as they face off against each other.

"I think there's a lot of fertile ground there," Cage said. "It's almost like if you factor in the idea of offspring and Castor and Sean having children and these children grow up, then it becomes like three-dimensional chess, and then it's not just the two of us, it's four of us ping-ponging and going at different levels, and it becomes even more complex."

But, understandably, not everyone is excited about the news.

"I can't believe they're ruining a classic like Face/Off with a sequel," tweeted one disgruntled fan. "Why can't they just leave well enough alone?"

Others are skeptical about the potential for the sequel to live up to the original.

"I love Face/Off, but I just don't know if a sequel can capture the same magic," said another.

The original Face/Off, directed by John Woo and released by Paramount Pictures in 1997, was a massive success, raking in a solid $245 million globally. It's often considered one of Woo's best works, and it's not hard to see why.

The complex and thrilling plot follows FBI Agent Sean Archer (Travolta) as he tracks down and captures his son's murderer, Castor Troy (Cage). When Archer learns of a bomb planted in Los Angeles with only Troy's brother knowing its exact location, he volunteers for an experimental face transplant program that swaps his face with Troy's in order to impersonate him in the brother's prison. Meanwhile, the real Troy awakens from his coma and takes Archer's face to infiltrate his family life.

How could a sequel possibly measure up to that game of cat and mouse?

But the team behind the sequel is up for the challenge, or at least they claim to be. Adam Wingard, known for directing The Guest (2014) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), will be at the helm. And according to Wingard, Cage will be a major part of the film, even though his character died at the end of the original. Wonder how they are going to get around that one.

"He's just having such a moment," Wingard said previously about Cage. "A couple of years ago, the studio maybe would have wanted a hot, young, up-and-coming actor or something. Now, Nicolas Cage is one of the hottest actors in Hollywood again."

Currently there's no release date set for Face/Off sequel, nor there's a cast announced officially. One thing's for sure – the pressure is on for the team to deliver a film that lives up to the original's hype. Here's hoping they don't completely ruin a classic.
