Even Big Bang Theory Creator Hated This Controversial Storyline
Putting Penny And Raj in one bed was a terrible decision, Steve Molaro agrees.
The Big Bang Theory has become a hit with a global audience. Viewers loved everything about the show, its characters, dialogues, plotlines.
However, there were some out-of-character scenes that the creators of the show regret to this day.
One of these scenes was part of the pilot and featured Sheldon and Leonard visiting a sperm bank in hopes to earn extra money.
The very idea of both character willingly donating their sperm seems ridiculous now that we've seen all 12 seasons of the show, but at the time the characters were not very well established so the scene didn't look like an eyesore. Nevertheless, later the creator Chuck Lorre removed the scene from the pilot.
Another shocking and completely out-of-character storyline came at the end of Season 4 and served as a huge cliffhanger for many fans. In the episode, Penny drinks too much wine and confesses to Raj that she's heartbroken over Leonard. They have a heart-to-heart conversation and wake up in one bed the next morning leaving fans with numerous questions.
Steve Molaro, one of the head writers, revealed to Jessica Radloff for her book The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series that he hated this ending proposed by Lorre to "shake up the group dynamic." The writer described himself obsessing about the scene during the hiatus between seasons and going to Lorre's office as soon as the opportunity presented itself.
"[I] said something like, 'This is really bothering me. I think I have a way that we can… get out of it and preserve the characters as they are,'" Molaro remembered.
Luckily, Lorre saw how important this was for Molaro and agreed to resolve the situation in a way that would preserve the group dynamic as it had been before and even came up with a satisfying explanation. In the first episode of Season 5, Raj asks Penny out on a date but Penny rejects him by saying their hookup was a mistake. Then, Raj reveals that there was no sex. Raj says that while he was putting on the condom, they both fell asleep so nothing actually happened. What a relief for Penny, Molaro, and the viewers!
