Euphoria Season 2 Was Painfully Unfair to Jules

It turns out that the second chapter of Euphoria has sidelined someone who used to be a main character actually.

Jules has been one of the centrepieces of the first Euphoria seasons, with their relationship with Rue and her own story basically being a pillar of the first chapter. However, things appeared to have dramatically changed in the second season.

Euphoria season 2 moved to focus on Rue more, turning Jules into some sort of a sidekick character who only mattered as the main heroine's girlfriend, fans argue. After a compelling storyline and great character development in season 1, the change was painful to many people.

"Narratively, it's a function of her being directly in Rue's sphere of influence. Rue doesn't see anything except how to get drugs, and how to hide from everyone that she is using them. And because of that, Jules becomes a problem to work around," Redditor DearMissWaite suggested.

Others agreed, noting how Jules was basically "a filler" in season 2, with the only meaningful part of hers being when she told Rue's mother about the latter's relapse.

However, it turns out that Jules is not even the only character who fans think was brushed under the rug in the second season.

"It's almost like Sam Levinson has difficulty writing for any character other than Rue. Jules, Kat and even Maddie felt like Sam just ran out of storyline ideas for them. They ended up being extensions of another character's storyline in S2, when in S1, they all had their own arcs. At least Jules got a special episode," Redditor Dreamlacer said.

While some people argued that Jules, as well as other Rue's classmates, are in fact side characters and should be treated as such, season 1 again proves them wrong, fans argue.

"Euphoria has always been presented as an ensemble show, meaning that not every plot line has to revolve around Rue despite her being our main character. Literally look at S1… several characters had fully developed plot lines and arcs that didn't involve Rue in the least. To say that Jules, a character central enough to the story that she got 1 of the 2 special episodes, is just a side character seems a little dismissive," Reddit fan OldTension9220 said.

No matter whether one likes Jules or not (we do remember that she is quite a controversial character, with some defending her until the end and others not being able to stand her), Euphoria creator Sam Levinson did not appear to do justice to her character, the majority of fans agreed.

However, there might be hope for season 3, which has been greenlit by HBO shortly after the second chapter premiered on the platform. The premiere date is yet to be scheduled, however.
