Emilia Clarke's Idea of Daenerys Ending is Way Better Than the Real Thing
Apparently, Emilia Clarke has been discussing Daenerys Targaryen's exit from Game of Thrones – and there is a strong sense that her idea trumps what actually happened to her character.
Dany was a role that was very close to Clarke's heart – particularly as she suffered multiple health issues when she first took on the part and sees it as marking a chapter in her own life.
In what was a widely panned ending to an epic series, Daenerys' rushed character arc and eventual death at the hands of Jon Snow was one of the most heavily criticised aspects of the latter half of GoT season 8.
Many fans felt that her descent into madness was handled in a terrible way by the writers and failed not just the show and the character, but Emilia Clarke too.
And the actor addressed her characters' demise when she appeared recently at Dreamit Con. Her preferred ending would have seen Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow very much alive and still together.
"I want Daenerys to be with him, with Jon." She said, adding, "They could go to family therapy and fix their issues."
Clarke described Daenerys as a "very hopeful character". She said that Dany "has a lot of hopes" and that it would have been nice for fans to know that she realised them.
These views are, of course, very similar to many of those expressed by fans of the show as the series drew to a close. Indeed, many viewers felt that Daenerys' dark turn was a storyline that damaged the whole show, not just its conclusion.
Clarke is reported to have said she thinks "Daenerys did nothing wrong." And that it's "not fair" that her character dies while Jon Snow lives on and enjoys an ending that gives him real hope. Jon, of course, ended the series beyond what remained of the Wall. He was free to live as a wildling, no longer burdened by duty. Sure, he had a fair amount of trauma to carry into his future, but there was also a sense of freedom and hope attached to his new life.
It's the kind of ending she feels that Daenerys Targaryen deserved.
Despite her comments, Clarke says she wouldn't reprise the role for a spinoff show. So, if you were hoping for Dany's dramatic return in the upcoming Jon Snow sequel, think again.
