Elsbeth’s Carrie Preston Teases How Many More Seasons She’s Ready to Lead
The actress, who plays one of the most charming female detectives of recent years, is quite determined about her path on the show.
It seems that women's names have been associated with detective mysteries for many decades, from Agatha Christie's Miss Marple to Mare of Easttown. At the same time, the image of a female character searching for criminals is still very stereotypical.
Elsbeth Is a Breath of Fresh Air in the Crime Genre
Elsbeth is a new kind of character for the mystery genre. She is sincere in her emotions, often clumsy and talkative. She is not formally a policeman, nor is she a private detective — she has no specific role. But her strength lies in a set of qualities that seem inappropriate for the profession. Elsbeth has no equal in her investigations. Suspects do not see her as an adversary and cannot even imagine how good she is at her job.
Thanks to Elsbeth's personal qualities, this show is very different from the serious procedurals like The Good Wife and The Good Fight. The spin-off is far from the seriousness of those serious detective stories and gravitates toward dramedy in the genre.
Everything about it is very lively, appropriately funny and refreshing for the whole crime genre. And Elsbeth is the perfect on-screen detective for everyone who is tired of gray and depressing crime shows.
How Long Is Carrie Preston Willing to Play Elsbeth?
We already know that Elsbeth has been renewed for a second season by CBS. But how long is Carrie Preston willing to play the character beloved by thousands of viewers? The actress answered this question in a recent interview:
“I’ll play this character as long as people will have me play her. [...] I’m grateful every day because I don’t know how long I’m going to be able to do it. Nothing lasts forever, so I’m going to enjoy it for as long as I can.”
The show's popularity is not only due to the show's writers, but also to Carrie Preston herself — an underrated actress with striking comedic talent. She is successful on TV, but little known on the big screen. Even in last year's touching hit The Holdovers, she played a supporting role.
Now, however, Elsbeth seems to be making amends, giving Preston a well-deserved solo show in which she is the main star.
