The show’s season 2 has a different priority to put the money into.

Elsbeth ’s first season got to be a whole new level of success for CBS, as the series’ high ratings eventually paved the way for a second installment to hit the network later this year.

Coming as some kind of spinoff to a 2009 political drama show The Good Wife, Elsbeth keeps its numerous fans on the hook in anticipation for more original characters appearing in the upcoming season, though for now this seemingly brilliant idea still meets some obstacles on its way to the show.

Following Elsbeth’s season 1 finale that tricked absolutely everyone with a cliffhanger that actually never made it to the episode, the series’ showrunner Jonathan Tolins revealed that the crew had always heard fans’ repeated demand to reintroduce The Good Wife’s main characters as guest stars in Elsbeth, but so far it hasn’t been yet decided whether something like this will happen in the upcoming season.

According to Tolins, he’s “certainly open to it” and “would love for it to happen if we can work it out somehow,” yet the bigger problem is that “we’re in a different city. We have very little real estate, and it’s hard because the real money for guest stars usually goes to the murderer.”

The showrunner then specified that turning Julianna Margulies’ Alicia Florrick or Christine Baranski’s Diane Lockhart into a murderer wouldn’t seem a great idea for either the show’s crew or the fans.

Though eventually Tolins explained that the production process is much more complicated for such an easy pick for a new character as “there’s budget, there’s schedule, there’s lots of things going on,” he still doesn’t rule out a possibility for The Good Wife’s cameos to make their entrance in the spinoff.

He later reassured doubters that “you don’t have to know anything about The Good Fight or The Good Wife to watch our show. It’s just sort of little fun things.”

Elsbeth season 2 will arrive at CBS this fall.
