Elsbeth may be charming and funny, but she is not the one and only charismatic investigator out there.

On May 23, the final episode of the first season of Elsbeth, a spin-off of The Good Wife about a lawyer who leaves her native Chicago for a solo adventure, was released. Elsbeth has a brilliant mind that allows her to look at things from an entirely different angle, and she clearly doesn't want to waste that on just being a lawyer. So she comes to New York at the invitation of the local mayor's office to help the police.

The main character is very similar to Peter Falk's character in the TV series Columbo: she can talk to suspects about abstract topics, quietly extract valuable information from them, and amaze them with non-trivial deductive powers that would make Sherlock Holmes jealous.

But if you've already seen such classics as Columbo, but still need a dose of a lighthearted, yet tense detective story, Peacock ( and Prime Video ) has the perfect replacement for Elsbeth while we wait for the second season, which most likely won't be released until the fall.

And that replacement is Psych, which ran from 2006 to 2014.

What Is Psych About?

Shawn Spencer is a young police consultant in Santa Barbara whose keen powers of observation and extraordinary deductive powers allow him to convince everyone that he is psychic. Shawn's father, a police officer, taught his son to notice the smallest details in the world around him, and now Shawn, along with his friend Gus, uses his unique abilities to help solve complex criminal cases.

At the same time, he pretends to be guided not by the real evidence he finds, but by some voices from the other world. However, Chief of Criminal Investigation Carlton Lassiter doubts that Shawn has psychic abilities, while Junior Investigator Juliet O'Hara and Interim Chief Karen Vick believe that Shawn is a real psychic.

Psych Is a Perfect Blend of Witty Humor and Intricate Investigations

The idea of the show itself is quite unusual – a slightly childish and clumsy character pretends to be a psychic in order to work with the police. And it's even funnier to see how the main character disguises ordinary logic as sudden insights and visions.

Despite the large number of comic situations, the plot has a strong detective component. The ongoing investigation is cleverly twisted, and the outcome is sometimes very dramatic.

Such a rare and successful combination of two genres has been well received by audiences – Psych now has an 89% rating from critics and a near-perfect 94% rating from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

Where to Stream Psych?

All eight seasons of Psych are available to watch on Prime Video and Peacock.
