The highly anticipated cliffhanger never made it to the season’s ending.

Elsbeth ’s first season officially wrapped it all up last night with the final episode, and some major changes the show has recently been hinting at turned out to be nothing more than everyone’s delusion.

The penultimate episode that aired a week earlier significantly intensified Elsbeth’s drama, leaving the character on the edge of her successful career in New York, but now she appears to be just fine.

However weird it may sound to the fans of modern shows that simply can’t do without major cliffhangers, Elsbeth’s creators indeed had a solid reason for the season’s happy ending.

Spoiler alert for Elsbeth’s season 1 finale.

The season’s last episode proves that the big fight between Elsbeth and her boss Wagner after he found out about her spying on him was just a fuss about nothing. Well, in the beginning he’s in fact shown trying to book a flight for Elsbeth to go back to Chicago, though later on things change drastically as not only he eventually allows her to stay, but also grants her Lieutenant Dave Noonan’s old office.

Additionally, the finale stays away from the show’s essential formula by leaving the viewers on the edge of their seats, waiting for the murderer to be exposed only by the end of the episode.

Given that the ninth episode left fans wondering about Elsbeth’s future at NYPD and whether she will actually part ways with Wagner as the latter’s actor Wendell Pierce recently suggested, the finale’s turn of events is something pretty much amicable and happy ending-coded that nobody ever expected for sure.

Whether fans are content about it now or not, Elsbeth’s creators appear to be extremely shrewd by giving the season a somewhat neutral ending.

According to Elsbeth’s showrunner Jonathan Tolins, the crew had no clue about the show’s potential renewal for another season right up to the very end of the shooting and everyone learned the good news in the midst of filming the finale.

Tolins made it clear that the team wasn’t ready to go that risky like other CBS shows did by leaving fans with a big cliffhanger that eventually might never be explained after all.

Apart from that, the showrunner revealed that even though there was no big drama in the finale, it still felt like a closure for the tension between Elsbeth and Wagner who in the next season may find themselves in a new place regarding their relationship.

Elsbeth will be back to CBS this fall with a second season.
