Don't Try This At Home: Kate Winslet Bested Insane Tom Cruise Record
The amount of Titanic floating door memes has certainly landed Kate Winslet in the top league with Office's Steve Carell and Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka by her side.
If this record doesn't count, here's another one for you. Kate Winslet has set a new underwater record beating none other than Tom Cruise!
She had to undergo training for James Cameron 's Avatar: The Way of Water to be able to hold her breath underwater for seven minutes and fifteen seconds, which is 1 minute 14 seconds longer than what Cruise did for Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation" in 2015. But it's not only Winslet who beat Cruise. Sigourney Weaver who appeared in both movies held her breath for six minutes and 30 seconds.
Winslet made this breathtaking revelation during her conversation with USA Today's Patrick Ryan when they spoke about Cameron's Avatar 2 filming process.
"Poor Tom. I mean, I don't know Tom at all – I've never met him in my life – but I'm sure he's getting very fed up of hearing this story of how I broke his record," joked Winslet adding that she was amazed at how good she was at holding her breath and how she just kept getting better.
She admitted that it was a happy coincidence that she had to do it for work – because it was something she had always dreamed of!
She also said that she had no doubts whether or not she should reunite with her Titanic director, when she was offered a role in Cameron's sequel of Avatar, the latter being the highest-grossing movie to date – it earned a staggering $3 billion worldwide.
"I was immediately onboard," said Winslet. She also said that she could understand why Cameron had chosen her – the director knew how far "she could be pushed" and how brave she was to face any kind of challenges.
Avatar: The Way of Water hit the big screen on December 16 and has so far grossed almost $442 million worldwide. This figure is less than its $500 million target. In the US, the movie has earned some $134 million, which is also below the $150-$175 million projections. Cameron has said in his recent interviews that he is thinking about the five-film Avatar franchise. However, there's one condition.
"Obviously we've got to make a profit or we're not going to keep doing it and beating our heads against the wall. But if we're successful, you know, movie three is in the can. Part of movie four is in the can," the filmmaker told Digital Spy.
If Avatar 3, which is slated for 2024, is financially successful, it will be followed by 2 more installments of the franchise scheduled for 2026 and 2028.
