The two actors played slightly different versions of the iconic character, but the TV Sherlock was more convincing.

Sherlock Holmes has appeared in four novels and 56 short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and has been the subject of numerous film and TV adaptations over the course of more than 100 years.

Recent adaptations have made Holmes and his investigations popular again. Today, Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr. are the fan-favorite versions of Sherlock, but who is the better of the two? You can fight us, but Cumberbatch leaves Downey Jr. far behind.

1. Cumberbatch’s Holmes is closer to the book original

Downey Jr.’s Holmes is similar to the book Sherlock – he is still a master of disguise and a classy street fighter, but he is completely different in behaviour. From a melancholic and sensitive aristocrat, Holmes became a bully, unbalanced and impulsive.

Benedict's Holmes got a unique image of a sociopath, cold and rude even to the closest people. Although this is not an exact image of the book’s Holmes, it is closer to the original.

2. Benedict’s Holmes cases are more interesting

The TV Sherlock has the capacity to show more different cases, while the Robert’s Holmes is limited to two movies and only two big cases.

However, these two plots turned out to be quite interesting – in one, Holmes investigates manifestations of black magic that turn out to be cunning manipulations, and in the other, he encounters his enemy Moriarty, who is capable of the most sophisticated crimes.

The series, on the other hand, skillfully plays with the variety of plots it has inherited. The final episodes were a bit disappointing for the audience, but if we ignore the disastrous last season, the BBC's Sherlock definitely has a greater variety of plots.

3. The chemistry between Cumberbatch and Freeman is second to none

BBC's Sherlock is praised for many things, but the show's main attraction is undoubtedly the chemistry between Martin Freeman's Watson and Holmes.

Sherlock and Watson have become one of the most important television bromances of the 2010s, and unfortunately, Jude Law's Watson is no match for Freeman's Watson.

4. Cumberbatch’s Holmes provided a new perspective on this iconic character

Using contemporary London as its main setting, Sherlock has adapted some of the detective's most famous cases and memorable characters to the present day, bringing a freshness to Holmes. In addition, by setting the events in the present day, Sherlock has become much closer to the fans and much more relatable.

Cumberbatch's Sherlock, while staying true to a classic image, gains new traits and shows new sides.
