What can be more Christmassy than a good carol?

Summary:

  • Doctor Who is a British science fiction series that has been on the air since 1963.
  • After the three-episode anniversary celebration, the show will return for a Christmas episode introducing the new Doctor and companion.
  • The 15th Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, and his companion Ruby, played by Millie Gibson, will appear in a musical number.

There is nothing more intimidating to the average television viewer than a musical episode. Except for those of us who grew up on Glee and have been immune to cringe-worthy performances since we saw Mr. Schuester's Gold Digger, people find it hard to watch someone break into song in the middle of a dramatic scene.

However, creating a good musical episode is not impossible. Many viewers have fallen in love with the concept since their obsession with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but there have also been some good examples in more recent shows. Musical episodes of Scrubs, Riverdale, or Lucifer are often considered to be among the fan favorites.

On the other hand, anyone who's seen the hot mess that was Grey's Anatomy's infamous attempt to fit in with the trend knows that sometimes it's good to play it safe and not try at all.

The good thing is that there's not much that could make Doctor Who fans cringe at this point. Having stuck with the show through so many highs and lows, true Whovians would easily endure the torture of a few botched songs.

So when the news of the "show-stopping musical number" was revealed in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, it was greeted with pure excitement.

What's even better is that there's actually a chance that the musical number will pleasantly surprise fans. It will be up to Russell T. Davies to come up with some catchy lyrics to create a real hit, considering how much people love Murray Gold's soundtracks for the show. The song will be performed by the duo of the Doctor and his companion, along with a cast of goblins.

And yes, the song will be available on streaming services as soon as the episode airs, so if it turns out to be great, the Whovians will have their chance to show their appreciation by pushing the track to the top of the music charts. That would be the most appropriate gift to give in return for a heartfelt comeback at Christmas time.

If you can't wait to see Ncuti Gatwa's 15th Doctor in action, be sure to tune in to Disney Plus on December 25th for the first look at The Church on Ruby Road and more holiday excitement.
