It’s a tough competition for Meredith Grey.

While ABC is universally known to produce one of the most heartbreaking and dark medical procedurals, Grey’s Anatomy, which has been running for more than 20 years now and still has many fans all across the world, the 2024/25 broadcasting season is going to bring some change of tone to the network with another show in a completely different tone.

Starting Thursday, September 26, 2024, the viewers will embark on a journey of the Odyssey cruise ship and get to know its small but mighty medical team. Led by Joshua Jackson, the show already promises to be something completely new.

What ABC’s Doctor Odyssey Is About?

With 2024 marking the first year of Ryan Murphy's 9-1-1, which moved from Fox to ABC, it was only fitting to premiere another of his shows on the same day. The medical procedural Doctor Odyssey will air every Thursday at 9 p.m., pushing Grey's Anatomy back an hour to 10 p.m.

Given that the network has decided to put Doctor Odyssey in the best primetime slot, executives must have high expectations for its performance. So far, however, we don't know much about the drama.

The cast that has been confirmed so far consists of well-known TV names such as Joshua Jackson, Don Johnson and Phillipa Soo. The entire show will be set on a cruise ship and promises to be as fun and chaotic as it sounds. Although he couldn't reveal much, Jackson teased the series in an interview with TVLine:

“The word that [Ryan Murphy] first used with me was ‘sparkle’. That everything should have a sparkle in your eye. And I take that to mean that the scripts are written with a lot of joy, and they are very funny, and they move very fast, and I think it is going to be our job as a cast to remember, that it is supposed to be an entertaining and enjoyable ride,” he said.

Though the show has only been described as a procedural drama, the cast's words lead viewers to believe that Doctor Odyssey would be a nice respite from the emotional rollercoaster that Grey's Anatomy has been for years.

If you are interested in checking out the show, be sure to tune in to the pilot episode on Thursday, September 26 on ABC or Hulu.
