Did Young Sheldon Set Image Just Foreshadowed George's Death?
Seems like we'll be weeping quite a while.
Summary
- TBBT has set up a few canon events that have yet to be addressed in Young Sheldon.
- The executive producer has hinted that all such events will in some way happen on the show.
- And now, a new photo from the set may hint at the impending untimely death of George Cooper Sr.
Although Young Sheldon is a direct prequel to The Big Bang Theory, the script did not literally match the image fans had of Sheldon's upbringing. George Sr., for example, wasn't a heavy drinker, and Georgie wasn't as simple-minded as his brother believed him to be. The adult Sheldon simply proved to be an unreliable narrator, not always able to read and interpret situations and other people.
And yet, such moments as the death of the family patriarch, which was repeatedly mentioned in TBBT, is a turning point for all Coopers, not just Sheldon, and therefore this moment simply could not be neglected, and the creators of the series understand this well. However, it seems that it will happen very soon, as a new update from the set seems to foreshadow this dark and tragic event.
There Is No Intention to Ditch the TBBT Canon
Well aware that this was an essential part of TBBT, and therefore could not be ignored in Young Sheldon, given its chronological proximity, executive producer Steve Holland confirmed in a conversation with TV Line that all canonical events will be addressed.
'I don't want to say what you will or won't see, but things will get addressed. We are not beholden to every joke that was ever made on The Big Bang Theory, but we do feel beholden to the larger canon and the larger events that shape Sheldon's life. We want to honor those.'
And that includes George's demise.
'That is a thing that happens in Sheldon's life. This is the same character [from Big Bang]. We are living in the same universe as Big Bang and that sort of world building is important. Big things that [Adult Sheldon said] happened in his life without a doubt happened.'
A New On-Set Photo May Foreshadow George's Death
For a long time now, our main insider on what to expect and what not to expect in future episodes of Young Sheldon has not been anonymous sources, but actress Raegan Revord, who plays Missy Cooper. On her personal Instagram account, she often shares fascinating details from the set, which is a primary source of theories and speculation, as literally any detail or carelessly spoken word could be a hint as to what we can expect in the Cooper family's story.
And so, just a few days ago, something remarkable appeared in Revord's Instagram stories. The actress pranked her fellow castmate and on-set father Lance Barber, who plays George Cooper St., joking that she was, 'Giving Lance an early heart attack.'
Of course, this is a typical update in which our favorite actors are just goofing around and getting ready for another shoot. And yet, many fans immediately assumed that since the cast is talking about this moment so casually, they already know what's coming. And given the canonicity of the event, it's likely to happen very soon.
As for when exactly it will occur, that depends on where Young Sheldon's story ends. However, canon has it taking place sometime in 1994-1995, before Sheldon enrolls at Caltech and after he catches his father 'cheating'. The fourth episode already addressed this last moment, confirming fan theories that George and Mary were just role-playing and Shelly misread the situation. So that one dark scene should arrive very soon.
The only thing we can say for sure, however, is that the tragedy will be quite unexpected, both for the characters and the audience. So let's keep our fingers on the pulse and wait for the release of the new episode, which will air on April 4 at 8:00 PM ET.
