Star Trek fans have spoken, and they're not impressed with Paramount Plus' latest announcement.

The streaming service has commissioned a new Star Trek series called Starfleet Academy, which will follow the adventures of young cadets in the 32nd century.

While the teen-oriented show sounds exciting, fans are disappointed that their call for a Picard spin-off called Star Trek: Legacy has gone unanswered.

Terry Matalas, showrunner for Picard, recently shared his idea for a sequel on Twitter which would reunite characters from The Next Generation with new characters.

The idea of Star Trek: Legacy was met with enthusiasm from fans and even some Star Trek stars. However, with Starfleet Academy being the latest addition to the franchise, it seems that Paramount Plus has missed the mark.

The fans took it to Twitter to express their disappointment on the issue, saying that Starfleet Academy series is "not what most wanted after Star Trek Picard."

The success of Picard's third season is proof that fans want to see a legacy characters-oriented continuation. The return of beloved characters and the introduction of new ones has created a buzz that has yet to die down.

A sequel could even bring back characters from other shows like Voyager and Deep Space Nine that were absent from Picard's finale.

Luckily for fans, this latest announcement is not the end of the line for new Star Trek adventures. There may be more projects in the works, according to franchise boss Alex Kurtzman.

Fans will have to wait and see if their wishes come true on the annual First Contact Day next year. Until then, they remain hopeful their pleas will be heard.

There's no information on release date or casting of the Starfleet Academy series yet, but production is supposedly set to begin next year.
