Denzel Washington’s Thriller With 45% Tomatometer Is Netflix’s #1 Movie Right Now
Turns out that streaming services can be real life savers for some failed movies.
Summary:
- After having dethroned The Accountant starring Ben Affleck, Denzel Washington’s 2021 movie is now dominating Netflix ’s top of this week.
- The movie also stars Rami Malek and Jared Leto with the latter being the main suspect in the murders that two detectives are investigating.
- Despite harsh reviews from critics and the box office failure, the movie still manages to find its audience and even get a higher score from it.
A week ago it was Ben Affleck’s The Accountant that was dominating Netflix’s top, but now it seems to be over. As a weird trend of box office flops being number one films on streaming keeps gaining its momentum, it’s now turn for Denzel Washington’s movie to conquer Netflix's chart.
Directed by John Lee Hancock, The Little Things is a neo-noir psychological thriller that, except for Washington, also stars major Hollywood actors like Rami Malek and Jared Leto. The plot follows two detectives who embark on a search for a culprit that’s responsible for numerous mysterious murders.
As they both get suspicious about a stranger who may be the murderer they’re looking for, the detectives’ work becomes even more entangled.
Despite a star-packed cast with several Oscar winners, the movie still didn’t make much of an impression neither in the box office nor among critics. The Little Things ended up with $29 million grossed while the initial budget was $29 million, as well as with only 45% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Some critics, to everyone’s surprise, were especially relentless towards Denzel Washington saying that he seems to have played this role before thus the actor can probably portray a character like this even in his sleep. Someone else suggested that everyone, except for Jared Leto, was forced into making the movie.
Without paying much attention to the professionals, the viewers themselves seem to be less judgy — and now they even go back to watching the film after its release 3 years ago.
Even at its start, The Little Things was more successful with the audience having received 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, and now it’s also on Netflix’s top showing better results than Baby Driver and other most-watched movies on the platform.
And even though The Little Things may be Denzel Washington’s boring performance or even one of the worst films in his career according to the sophisticated critics, it still deserves a chance to be appreciated by the common audience — and Netflix's viewers prove it.
