Harry Potter fans remember monsters like the Basilisk and the Dementors well, but these terrible monsters have been undeservedly ignored.

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry and Dumbledore went to a cave with a dark lake. It was there that Tom Riddle hid one of his many Horcruxes – the Salazar Slytherin's Locket.

Getting this artefact was quite difficult, as characters had to fulfill a number of conditions and then meet the underwater guardians – the Inferi.

The Inferi – once dead people who have been revived with the help of a dark spell, who completely obey the orders of the wizard and do not need to be constantly monitored.

Severus Snape said that Inferi are empty bodies without souls, like puppets, which cease to exist without a creator.

The most famous user of their services was, of course, Tom Riddle, aka Voldemort. Long before the main events of the book began, the Dark Lord was mercilessly killing people and making Inferi out of them.

At that time, he created them for the sole purpose of guarding his Horcrux in this very cave. This location was chosen for a reason, as the lake served as a cover for his dead army.

If those who entered the cave somehow survived after drinking the terrible potion, a deadly dryness would set in their throats, leaving them no choice but to drink water from the lake, where the Inferi were already waiting for them.

This plan worked as it should only once. Regulus Black, brother of Sirius Black, was dragged to the bottom by the Inferi.

The only way to destroy the Inferi is to burn them. Fire can destroy anything, and the Inferi are no exception. It is worth noting that Tom Riddle provided for the possibility of the arrival of a person who knows how to destroy them.

That is why he chose a place with a lake, so that the terrible creatures can hide in the water and not be burned to death.

Also, when Dumbledore used more fire than anyone expected, the Inferi hesitated and began to slowly retreat, apparently the Dark Lord ordered them to avoid the flames in every possible way.

In short, the Inferi are some of the most intimidating and deadly creatures in the Harry Potter universe.

And if Voldemort had used them not only for guarding, but also among his troops, who knows how the fate of the Wizarding World would have turned out.
