Dark Reason Why Brendan Fraser Never Attends Golden Globe Ceremony
This incident had a long influence on the actor's departure from the cinema.
The 2000s were a tough time for Fraser – and not just because of the injuries he suffered on the set of The Mummy.
In 2003, he met Philip Berk, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the one that runs the Golden Globe Awards, in the hallway of the Beverly Hills Hotel.
The man started a conversation with the actor and then suddenly grabbed his buttocks and tried to perform sexual acts.
Fraser was overwhelmed and ran away from the hotel. For many years he suffered from depression. The actor spoke about the incident only in 2018, but the accusations did not lead to anything.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association called the incident a "joke" and Berk called it some kind of playful slap.
Fraser does not regret the confession: it helped him stop blaming himself for what happened. And when the bad memories are too heavy, the actor goes to the backyard of his home in New York and shoots with a bow.
Over the past few decades, he has become a skillful archer.
After that, Fraser decided that even if he was nominated, he would not attend the Golden Globes. And so it was – Brendan was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in Darren Aronofsky's The Whale.
He did not attend the ceremony.
"I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. […] It's because of the history that I have with them. And my mother didn't raise a hypocrite. You can call me a lot of things, but not that," the actor said in his interview with GQ.
The difficult road to success of the actor has touched many. Even before The Whale, the actor starred in Steven Soderbergh's acclaimed 2021 movie No Sudden Move.
And on October 6, 2023, Martin Scorsese 's Killers of the Flower Moon will be released, where Fraser stars alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.
But after years of failure and Hollywood indifference, Fraser is slow to jump to conclusions and cautious about the future.
The actor's philosophy is well summed up by a line from his favorite Herman Melville poem: "I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I'll go to it laughing."
Perhaps it was this approach that helped Fraser win the coveted Oscar.
