Many viewers couldn't sleep for days contemplating this dark ending with unexpected twists.

Summary

  • There are countless shows in the thriller genre on Netflix, but one in particular stands out, which was released in 2021.
  • It is a psychological thriller created by Hannibal executive producer Steve Lightfoot.
  • Netflix users were shocked by the creepy ending that provided a double twist.

Netflix is one of the top streaming services for a reason. What attracts so many millions of users around the world is the freedom to choose content — Netflix's library may not be endless, but there is never a shortage of viewing options.

In particular, the platform actively offers all kinds of movies and series in the thriller genre, as users enjoy following nail-biting events full of thrills and suspense while waiting for mind-blowing revelations. Some of the most popular projects are the live-action adaptations of thriller king Harlan Coben, including the release earlier this year of Fool Me Once, starring Michelle Keegan and Richard Armitage.

But as the number of thrillers on Netflix has grown over the past few years, it's become increasingly difficult to find a series that doesn't follow typical tropes and clichés and offers something truly original.

Fortunately, the streaming service can satisfy even the pickiest of viewers, and today we're going to talk about an unusual psychological thriller that took a sudden supernatural turn and delivered one of the darkest and creepiest endings in television history per se. Without further ado, let's find out what could make this criminally underrated show your new binge-watching option this weekend.

What Is This Netflix Show?

The name Steve Lightfoot may not be familiar to all of our readers, but it's sure to raise eyebrows among fans of Hannibal with Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy, as he was the executive producer of that iconic psychological horror thriller.

But the name will also likely be remembered by fans of Netflix's Marvel era, as he was the showrunner of The Punisher with Jon Bernthal, which also fell under the definition of a thriller in some ways.

Fast-forward to 2021, and Lightfoot has released a new series that also qualifies as a thriller, except that it begins much lighter than the first two but ends with a dark and startling revelation that would surprise even the most seasoned horror fans. We're talking about Behind Her Eyes, a miniseries starring Simona Brown, Tom Bateman, Eve Hewson and Robert Aramayo.

A Dark Thriller with a Supernatural Twist

Behind Her Eyes is an adaptation of the 2017 novel of the same name by English author Sarah Pinborough. The plot follows Louise Barnsley (Brown), a young woman who one day at a bar gets close to a handsome man named David Ferguson (Bateman) over a drink or two. The next day, the two find themselves in an awkward position when David turns out to be the new psychiatrist Louise is going to work for as a secretary.

The situation becomes even more confusing when it turns out that David is married and his wife Adele (Hewson) wants to meet Louise. As a result, the protagonist finds herself in an even messier scenario as she gets closer to the couple and learns about their complicated relationship.

However, things soon take a darker turn as there may be a sinister conspiracy behind the couple's marriage. But that's not all, because the ending had a double twist that no one was expecting.

What is the supernatural element and what is the double twist at the end, you ask? Well, that's going to be incredibly difficult to explain without giving away major spoilers, so let's just say this: even though the setting of the series starts out quite down-to-earth and mundane for a thriller, the plot eventually touches on the theme of the transmigration of souls.

Yes, you heard that right! And in the end, one of the members of the Ferguson family may turn out not to be who they claim to be, and no one expects that, neither the audience nor the characters.

All 8 episodes of Behind Her Eyes are available on Netflix.
