Danny DeVito Ready to Save Gunn's DCU If He Gets to Reprise His Old Batman Role
The DCU really needs to start off strong to have people forget about The Flash’s failure, and Danny DeVito is willing to help with that… For the right price, of course.
James Gunn is now in charge of DC and he’s going to relaunch the entire cinematic universe to finally build something, well, coherent after years of questionable entries that plagued the DCU. This goal is almost too gargantuan, but the ambitious director is certain he’ll succeed; still, there are too many things that must be done.
To follow the great tradition and give a proper opening to the new DCU, Gunn wants to open it with his own vision of the red-cape hero in Superman: Legacy. The director already cast his new Man of Steel (even though he looks just like the old one if he was skipping gym) and is setting up the movie’s pre-production now.
But Superman is only one of the two most iconic DC superheroes — everyone’s extremely curious to learn who’s going to inherit Batman ’s mask after Christian Bale and Ben Affleck. While there’s been no announcement of a new Bruce Wayne project so far, the people need answers since the cast needs to be perfect.
While the audience is striving for the Batman franchise relaunch, one of the former actors expressed his desire to reprise his role in it and make sure the movie goes the right way. Danny DeVito, who played The Penguin in Tim Burton’s 1992’s Batman Returns claims that he’d be more than happy to come back as the creepy villain.
"I would definitely consider doing it, yeah! Batman Returns was a great part, it was operatic. <...> Being the odd man out – the odd bird out – brought the character out of me. It was an emotional experience for me because I felt it was an opportunity of a lifetime to play Oswald Cobblepot with Tim’s vision and design,” shared DeVito.
Bringing an actor from decades ago back to their roles might have sounded weird before, but it’s not a rare occurrence anymore; after all, DeVito’s co-star Michael Keaton, who played Batman in the same movie, came back to his role for The Flash, so there’s nothing preventing Gunn from having Danny back as The Penguin.
Let’s just hope that if he does that, the final result will be better than The Flash, because ruining the Caped Crusader’s story would likely kill the new DCU.
