Dakota Johnson’s Hidden Comedy Talent Shines in Must-See Flick That Tops HBO Now
You should give it a try if you’re a fan of When Harry Met Sally.
The Madame Web actress made her name known all around the world with the erotic drama trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey (2015 - 2018) and the horror film Suspiria (2018). However, Dakota Johnson is also very much of a comedy performer.
Although the romantic comedy How to Be Single (2016) and the dramedy The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019), that starred the actress, weren’t quite successful, the 2022 movie that is now holding the second place on HBO’s global top is truly a must-watch.
The plot of this comedy-drama revolves around Lucy, a 32-year-old woman who seems not to make it through coming of age yet. Her only interest in life is her best friend Jane, who is about to leave her soon as she announces her moving to London.
It’s high time for Lucy to figure out who she really is and what kind of feelings she has for Jane. As she reveals a long-held secret, their friendship is in danger of being ruined.
Without delving much into spoilers, we can only hint at the exploration of the LGBT-related issues in this movie, and here it’s done perfectly. That’s why it becomes reminiscent of Nick Robinson’s romantic comedy Love, Simon (2018).
Johnson is absolutely hilarious, yet convincing in the film, as she manages to convey the difficulties of an adult woman who isn’t really capable of understanding herself.
The actress delivers the jokes that are relatable to most of us the best way possible, as well as her co-star, the star of HBO’s House of the Dragon, Sonoya Mizuno.
Titled Am I Ok, this 81%-rated movie has already become an Internet hit, with many viewers praising Johnson’s performance.
“At first I thought Dakota Johnson was miscast but I grew to find it interesting to have a protagonist that's quietly questioning her identity,” says Redditor @grandmofftalkin.
The dramedy is now also receiving comparisons to the genre’s classics.
“It's kinda got inverse Harry Met Sally vibes with the ups and downs in the relationship and the way it's all about their friendship,” admits @LiteraryBoner, comparing Am I Ok to 1989’s hit.
