Criminal Minds’ Reid And JJ Would’ve Been The Cutest Couple If The Show Didn’t Ruin It
All they needed was a little bit more time.
If there's one thing fans hated more about Criminal Minds season 14 than JJ's confession of love to Reid, we've yet to find it.
Ever since the episode aired, fans have been haunted by the memory of that out-of-nowhere moment.
But it could have been so different if only the writers had given the couple a little more thought.
It was pretty clear that the writers of Criminal Minds decided to continue the romance between Reid and JJ only because of the attention they got as friends. Viewers were very interested in their relationship and the love they have for each other as friends and partners, so they saw an opportunity to develop it into something bigger.
However, after 14 seasons of the show, the personalities of these characters had already been established in a certain way, and no one could see a place for such a romance.
A sibling friendship aside, many fans feel that the ship has already sailed. The showrunners had a perfect opportunity to bring the two of them closer together in a romantic way back in season 1 of the show when there was some flirting between JJ and Reid. But that didn't happen.
And it's not going to happen again anytime soon. Even if, for some reason, the writers decided to put the relationship on the back burner and focus on friendship and building trust first, that would be fine a few years later.
However, since more than a decade has passed and both Reid and JJ have had more than enough time to build their separate lives, a sudden burst of romance feels extremely unnecessary and unnatural. Many fans have admitted that this was the lowest point of the show in their opinion, and still wish they could just erase it completely.
No matter what you think about JJ and Reid as a couple, the show must go on, and it does. Criminal Minds is still on the air. Season 17 (or as you may know it, Criminal Minds: Evolution 2) is expected to begin production as soon as the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved. Stay tuned for news and updates!
