Criminal Minds fans, your long wait is almost over. Paget Brewster recently announced that filming has wrapped on the second season of Evolution, and then the release date for the new chapter in the BAU team's investigation was announced – and it's closer than you think!

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Filming Wrapped & Release Date Announced

Recently, Paget Brewster, who plays Emily Prentiss, posted on X that filming on the second season has wrapped:

“We’re shooting the last episode of Criminal Minds and it’s a lot. The scripts are great!”

It didn't take long for Paramount+ to announce the release date for Evolution Season 2, or the 17th season of Criminal Minds as a whole – June 6.

What Will Season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution Be About?

All that is known about the plot of the second season is that after capturing perhaps the most ruthless criminal in the show's history, Sicarius, the new season will see the BAU team investigate the mysterious Gold Star.

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Will Feature an Exciting Cast Addition

In addition to the main cast, the second season will also feature an all-new character never before seen by viewers – Dr. Jill Gideon, played by Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman. Dr. Jill is a biological psychiatrist who will help the BAU team investigate a mysterious conspiracy theory. And yes, Jill is the ex-wife of Jason Gideon, who was killed off-screen in Season 10.

Fans are already speculating that the addition of Jill to the show could mean that fan-favorite Jason could also return, either as a ghost or in a flashback, but there has been no official word on that.

Will Dr. Spencer Reid Return in Season 2?

Hardcore Criminal Minds fans, however, have been waiting several years for the return of another character – Dr. Spencer Reid. The good news is that the possibility of Matthew Gray Gubler returning as Reid in the second season is not zero – the actor shared in an interview that he could not join the cast of the first season due to his busy schedule.

The bad news is that there has been no official information from the show's creators about this either.

The Fans Won’t See One Recurring Character in Season 2

In the second season, viewers will not see one of the recurring characters – William LaMontagne Jr., JJ's husband, played by Josh Stewart.

The actor did not explain the reason for his departure, but it can be assumed that sixteen seasons is a (very) long time and Sewart decided to move on to other projects.
