Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2: Is Derek's Comeback a Possibility?
Shemar Moore had the best reaction when asked if he would eventually return to Criminal Minds.
After the news of Paramount+ renewing Evolution for season 2, Criminal Minds fans took to social media to demand the return of beloved characters. Besides Matthew Gray Gubler's Dr. Spencer Reid, fans hope other original profilers will reunite with the BAU in their future hunts for unsubs.
"Bring back Derek Morgan!" is one of the frequent fan demands.
With his "sculpted chocolate thunder" looks, great sense of humor, tragic backstory, and undeniable chemistry with Penelope Garcia, Derek Morgan, played by Shemar Moore, had become one of the most beloved characters of Criminal Minds.
Biggest Criminal Minds Star You Totally Forgot Was on Friends
Fans enjoyed watching his character grow and evolve over the course of the series, and many were disappointed when he left the show in season 11 to focus on his family life.
Throughout the series, Morgan was a valuable member of the BAU, and his absence was deeply felt by fans and the team. But is there a chance that Shemar Moore's character returns to Criminal Minds?
There's definitely such a possibility from the storyline perspective. It would be totally in character for Derek, deeply dedicated to the team who had become his close friends, to come running in times of need. After all, he already did so in season 13 when Garcia was going through a difficult time and needed his help.
One Derek Scene in Criminal Minds Never Fails to Make Fans Tear Up
The real question here is whether Moore would be willing or able to reprise his iconic role.
"Would I go back to 'Criminal Minds' and flirt with my baby girl, and chase down unsubs? Sure, alright. But Hondo kinda busy," the actor told ET ahead of Evolution premiere.
Moore referred to his other project, CBS' police procedural S.W.A.T. where he plays protagonist Sergeant Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson. The show's season 7 has not been officially announced, leaving Moore time to take part in Evolution season 2. But then, the show hasn't been canceled either, and Moore made headlines last week, revealing that he will soon become a first-time father.
It is possible that with the real "baby girl" on the way, Moore, just like his character, will choose to focus on family life instead of bouncing between two shows. But fans still hope that the creators of Criminal Minds will find a way to bring back the beloved character, and the actor will say "yes."
