Could Red Dead Redemption Follow The Last Of Us To The Small Screen?
Is a path taken by the hugely popular The Last Of Us HBO adaptation also suitable for other videogames to follow?
There's an argument about Red Dead Redemption that has fans divided.
Could Red Dead Redemption succeed on the small screen if it were ever to be adapted for a TV series format?
Although recent years have presented us with a list of hit and miss videogames adaptation, both for big and small screens, HBO stroke literal ratings gold with their The Last Of Us show.
When wishfully thinking about possible future games' adaptations, Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption series comes to mind.
When talking about a possibility of a Red Dead Redemption TV adaptation, this is what to be noticed in fans' train of thought:
"I'd like to see it, but at the same time The TLOU series is a really rare occasion, most adaptations of games are complete garbage and stray way too far from the source. I'd hate to see that happen to RDR," Redditor Twitius0 said.
An argument can also be made that the Western setting can be off-putting for the modern audiences:
"As it is set in rather racist, sexist time with really grey characters, I greatly fear that showrunners will try to significantly alter plot and characters." Redditor Inevitable_Question weighs in.
True, but HBO might be just the platform to pull this off and perhaps even dismantle the American myth of Old West and highlight the cruelness of the time period. HBO has a successful history of tackling painful and brutal topics.
Considering the current immense popularity of Yellowstone, the Western setting of Rockstar Games' series might as well hit just the right spot:
"One could argue that the popularity of Yellowstone and 1883 would indicate there's an audience but it might be too expensive to justify," Redditor charliemike makes the case for Red Dead Redemption.
Well, money should not be an issue for HBO and if executed correctly the Red Dead Redemption might become a hit and bring in a fortune. And yes, we said "if".
Make no mistake, the case of The Last Of Us may just be an exemplary one, the popularity of which is very hard to duplicate. But it definitely can pose an inspiration for many great works making their way from consoles to TV.
