If there's one duo in the industry that's been on everyone's mind since July 2023, it's Cillian Murphy and Christopher Nolan. Although the two have been working together for quite some time now, it's Oppenheimer that opened the public's eyes to their combined creative powers.
Working so closely together behind the cameras, there was no question that these two industry masters were also close in real life. With all the heartwarming quotes the duo have shared about each other, fans have been eager to learn more about how their friendship and creative partnership came to be.
Thanks to Cillian Murphy's GQ cover story, there are few more fun facts to learn about Christopher Nolan's surprisingly personal approach to work.
Cillian Murphy and Christopher Nolan Friendship
According to Murphy, it's not just Nolan's creative vision or directorial style that keeps him coming back to his projects. There's an element of tradition that runs through every movie they make together that just adds to the experience and makes it extra enjoyable to be a part of.
In an interview with GQ, he gave a little insight into what makes working with Christopher Nolan so special. It turns out that the filmmaking process is something that the director's entire family is involved in. At least in the pre-production phase.
“So, like, it’s been his mom who’s delivered the script to me before. Or his brother, he’ll go away and come back in three hours. Part of it has to do with keeping the story secret before it goes out. But part of it has to do with tradition. They’ve always done it this way, so why stop now? It does add a ritual to it, which I really appreciate. It suits me,” the actor explained.
While such an informal approach may not be for everyone, it brings another level of joy to see that the industry has not run out of heartfelt human interactions. The Nolan family's script delivery system may seem overly complicated, but as long as it works for everyone involved, fans are happy to see the tradition continue.
