Christopher Nolan Recommends: This Epic Kaiju Movie is a Must-Watch For The Eternal Zero Fans
The master shares his admiration for another Oscar-winning movie in a talk with its director.
While the Oscars ’ fever hasn’t finished yet, these days there are lots of subsequent discussions, announcements and juicy updates on the next projects of the triumphants. Christopher Nolan ’s interview with Takashi Yamazaki hasn’t become an exception.
The directors paired up in a discussion for Oppenheimer 's Japanese distributor, Bitters End Inc., during which they touched on the topic of Yamazaki’s latest accoladed movie.
The point is not only that Nolan's biopic about the father of the atomic bomb was celebrated by the Academy, but his colleague’s Godzilla Minus One, a 2023 epic kaiju (monster) movie, has also won a statue, the one in the Best Visual Effects category.
Set in postwar Japan, the movie follows a disgraced fighter pilot who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after encountering a giant monster known as Godzilla, which makes the movie strike a balance between the spectacle expected from a kaiju movie and the thorough demonstration of a person’s inner drama. Having managed to do it, it successfully grossed $107 million worldwide against the budget of $10–12 million.
During the interview, Nolan called Godzilla Minus One a “tremendous film”, admiring its well-built mechanics, which quickly attracts attention, and, besides, comparing it to Yamazaki's earlier feature, The Eternal Zero, a 2013 historical war movie.
The Oppenheimer director also noted that despite the movie’s significant part being about a monster, with this part being made excitingly entertaining, it doesn’t forget about the deep elaboration of an individual's development and the war’s impact on it.
“There was wonderful depth to the characters and a wonderful sense of history that I really appreciated,” concludes Nolan in his genuine statement about the movie.
Yamazaki, in his turn, dropped a hint about the Godzilla Minus One sequel, saying that it will presumably feature a new monster and a plot about humanity dealing with the tough consequences of Godzilla's resurgence with much more action and suspense.
After the Japanese Godzilla banger rekindled people’s interest in kaijus, viewers will meet the two terrifying monsters together in the upcoming Adam Wingard's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which is scheduled to be released in the US on March 29.
