Hollywood’s best Chris isn’t having the best times.

Summary:

  • Chris Pine ’s directorial debut is getting close to becoming the biggest flop of this year, according to the reviews coming from both critics and moviegoers.
  • Created by and starring Pine himself, the movie follows a pool cleaner who embarks on his own investigation of the local businessman’s shady deeds.
  • Pine has recently admitted that, with all the backlash coming in his way, he had to rewatch his brand new film, but still loved it.

Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman released a couple of days ago may be the best thing that ever happened to him, but everyone else would probably disagree. Starring Pine himself, the movie got its premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival where it was received coldly, yet relatively well, but after things were quick to get out of the actor’s control.

Upon its release in the US on May 10, Poolman was brutally crushed by both critics and viewers ending up with quite miserable scores of 18% and 22% respectively.

Being Chris Pine’s brainchild in all aspects, Poolman follows Darren Barrenman who spends his days cleaning the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block while also trying to turn Los Angeles, his hometown, into a better place to live in.

Darren’s life starts getting new colors when femme fatale June Del Ray, portrayed by DeWanda Wise, reaches out to him asking to uncover councilor Stephen Toronkowski’s shady business plans. Barrenman then embarks on his own investigation getting support from his not less eccentric friends.

Following the movie’s quite poor start in the theaters, Pine made an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast to once again talk about the new project that turned out to be such a disaster.

The actor revealed that he was dumbfounded by everyone’s harshness towards Poolman as he did his best “to make a joyful film”. Pine then added that he even had to discuss this issue with his therapist to eventually get rid of intrusive thoughts about Poolman’s toxic reviews.

With all the backlash that his directorial debut received, Pine still doesn’t seem to give up on himself as he recalled once having second thoughts about his career. The actor admitted that, after becoming aware of all the criticism, he had to rewatch Poolman to make sure whether he indeed had made “a pile of sh-t”, but even after that still liked his film a lot.

Some can only envy Chris Pine’s ability to stay positive about all the bad things happening while he also seems to be learning lessons from such a tough experience. During the podcast, the actor revealed that he had already been eyeing another film to direct sometime in the future saying that Poolman “forced me to double down on joy and really double down on what I love most about my job”.

Fingers crossed that Pine’s career as a movie director just had a bad start.
